Well Woman Exam Q & A
Why is a well-woman exam important?
Regular well-woman exams are part of your overall preventive health care plan. These evaluations are essential to ensure you’re in good health and to intervene early if anything is awry. It’s important to schedule routine well-woman exams to:
- Manage your weight
- Check your hormone levels
- Start or change your birth control
- Prevent or treat STDs
- Get screened for cervical cancer and human papillomavirus (HPV)
It’s also important to schedule well-woman exams to manage chronic conditions, including abnormal bleeding and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
What should I expect during a well-woman exam?
The caring OB/GYN team at Contemporary Women's Care wants to get to know you as a whole person. It’s helpful to transfer over your medical records from your previous provider so your OB/GYN can get information about your health history.
- Breast exam
- Pelvic exam
- Pap smear
- Blood pressure check
- Update of your family health history
- Height and weight evaluation
- Vaccination updates, such as the HPV shot
Your OB/GYN at Contemporary Women's Care can order any essential lab testing, including a urinalysis or blood tests. She can even give you a referral for a mammogram.
What Happens If you have a new health problem when you come for your annual exam?
Annual exam appointment times do not allow for both a "Well-women exam" and a "problem visit", and cause longer waiting times for our patients. However, we understand your desire to take care of your annual exam and any problems you may have in one visit, If you and your provider decide to discuss your additional or new health concerns during your Well women exam, we will file your Well women exam and the appropiate Evaluation and Management code for the addition of a problem/sick visit. This may result in an additional copay, deductible, and or co-insurance. You may also choose to go ahead with your annual exam, and defer the health concern to another visit.
How often do I need a well-woman exam?
In general, the team at Contemporary Women's Care schedules you for well-woman exams once a year, right around the same time. But you might need to come in two or more times per year if you need help managing a chronic condition, have abnormal Pap smear results, or have a breast issue.
Contemporary Women's Care provides personalized well-woman exams in a comfortable environment. Request your evaluation over the phone today.
