OBGYN Q & A
Why is it important to see an OB/GYN?
An OB/GYN becomes part of your medical team during your teen years. They play a critical role in your reproductive and sexual wellness and collaborate with your primary care doctor to ensure you’re in good health. It’s important to see an OB/GYN for preventive care, as well as anytime you have:
- Heavy periods or abnormal uterine bleeding
- STD symptoms
- Questions or concerns about birth control
- Menopause symptoms
- Infertility issues
- Pelvic pain
Your OB/GYN is also your go-to provider once you become pregnant. They care for you throughout your pregnancy, labor and delivery, and postpartum.
What happens during an OB/GYN exam?
Contemporary Women's Care is dedicated to providing compassionate obstetrics and gynecology care. Your exams are entirely tailored to you based on your overall health and any concerns you have.
In addition to a head-to-toe evaluation, laboratory testing, and a pelvic exam and Pap smear (if needed), your OB/GYN requests screenings that are tailored to you. For example, if you regularly experience abnormal uterine bleeding, your OB/GYN may perform an in-office ultrasound to see if you have any growths or lesions that could contribute to your symptoms.
If you’re pregnant, your obstetric care exam includes a series of evaluations to ensure both you and baby are healthy. In this case, your OB/GYN may get your weight, measure your belly, and perform an ultrasound to monitor your baby and listen to their heartbeat.
For high-risk pregnancies, like if you’re pregnant with multiple babies or are over age 35, you may need additional screenings, such as an amniocentesis, biophysical profile, or chorionic villus sampling. No matter what your women’s health needs may be, the team at Contemporary Women's Care is available to help.
How often do I need to see an OB/GYN?
As long as you’re generally healthy and don’t have any current issues, you need a well-woman exam once a year. But if you have a history of STDs, heavy bleeding, ovarian cysts, or other issues, your OB/GYN at Contemporary Women's Care may want you to come in for an exam more regularly.
If you’re pregnant, you typically need prenatal visits once a month until you reach your third trimester. After that point, bi-weekly or weekly prenatal exams are common.
For high-risk pregnancy obstetric care, your OB/GYN at Contemporary Women's Care might schedule you for prenatal visits twice a month up until about week 28. After that point, your OB/GYN will likely want to see you every other week or every week until it’s time for delivery.
